Product Carbon Footprint: Understanding Our Commitment to Climate ProtectionAt SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE, we believe that living a healthy life is only possible on a healthy planet. That's why within the Planetary Care pillar of our Sustainable Development strategy, we have committed to the following target for the material topic of Climate Protection: Engaging suppliers and customers to reach net-zero. One of the initiative’s objectives is to improve the validity of Scope 3 data with suppliers to steer net-zero, and to make Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) results transparent for customers. Let us take a closer look at our PCF initiative, why we are doing it, what it is, and how it works.

Why We Are Doing It: Engaging Suppliers and Customers to Reach Net-Zero.

To achieve our net-zero reduction path aligned to the Paris Climate Agreement's 1.5° goal, we consciously decided to take a science-based approach and to include emissions caused in the production of each product we sell to our customers. We want to become a forerunner in our industry and understand our upstream emissions on an SKU specific level to enable efficient steering of our 1.5° aligned net-zero path.Making PCF results transparent for customers is another important aspect of our initiative. Consumers are becoming increasingly demanding and critical of companies' sustainability activities, including information on carbon emissions. Our answer is to invest in accounting and communicating PCFs including information about emissions caused along the whole life-cycle of products. We believe that consumers want to understand the impact related to their individual purchase rather than generic Corporate Carbon Footprints and climate targets.

PCF is a methodology used to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions of a product throughout its life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. The PCF is expressed in CO2 equivalents (CO2e) and provides an insight into the product's impact on climate change. To estimate the PCF of our products, we have partnered with Vaayu, an expert in the field that leverages AI technology. We used the life cycle assessment (LCA) framework following ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards to estimate the PCFs. Initially, we started with screening 250 SKUs and we are working together continuously with our suppliers and Vaayu on improvements to achieve a screening of 1000 SKUs by the end of this year.
